Degree show
In 2021, I was part of a team of six final-year students who were asked to transform the University of Reading’s Department of Typography and Graphic Communication degree show into a virtual event due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
We created Think Rethink, a brand identity inspired by the idea of revisiting and refining design concepts. The visual language featured elements like student sketches and early concepts, with symbols such as the shift-return icon to represent the process of thinking, breaking, and rethinking.
My role focused on branding, social media, and promotional content. I designed visuals and managed the content strategy across Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook, using these platforms to build interest, preview student work, and drive traffic to the website. We also designed printed invitations with a triplex finish and a QR code, bridging the physical and digital aspects of the event.
One of our biggest challenges was translating the atmosphere of a physical show into an engaging online experience. After researching other virtual exhibitions, we decided to prioritise accessibility and clarity, creating a simple, user-friendly website. I worked on the wireframes and collaborated on the layout of student profiles to ensure browsing was intuitive and engaging.
The virtual launch event featured a mix of live and pre-recorded content, including interviews with students across different design disciplines. I helped run the event, managing transitions and encouraging audience participation. The show was a success, attracting a wide audience and generating great engagement, showing how thoughtful design can adapt to new formats in challenging times.
